The Tombs of the Caliphs, or the Northern Cemetery of Cairo, is one of the most recognizable early photographic subjects in the city, and this view belongs to a group of albumen prints made in the decades after photography reached Egypt. The domed tombs and mausoleums rise from the desert edge to the northeast of the medieval city, built over several centuries for Mamluk rulers and their families. Photographers working in the 1860s through the 1880s were drawn to the stone domes and carved arches, which tourists and travel publishers treated as emblems of Cairo's Islamic past. The album from which this print comes, arranged by city, reflects the travel-souvenir market of that period.
