Set in an Arab village in Cairo, this view centers on the mosque of Kaget Bey, a modest local landmark rather than one of the city's grand monuments. Albumen prints like this one, made between 1860 and 1890, were often gathered into travel albums, and this example is numbered 151 in a set that also covered Jerusalem, Alexandria and Rome. Photographers of the period were drawn to Cairo's mosques, whose domes and minarets appealed to European and American audiences eager to see the Near East. The print preserves how village architecture looked in those decades, before many such places changed.
