A water carrier in Cairo, shown with the heavy goatskin or earthenware vessel that his trade depended on, is the subject of this albumen print. The title's question marks reflect real uncertainty about the exact location and the sitter's role, so the record leaves some of the picture open. The print was made between 1860 and 1890, when photographers working in Egypt often sold views of local laborers and street life to travelers, who collected them in bound albums much like the one this print came from. Its catalog note places it in a series labeled for Jerusalem, Alexandria, Cairo, and Rome, a reminder of how the tourist trade shaped what the camera recorded.
