The Tombs of the Caliphs sit in the desert cemetery on the northeastern edge of Cairo, a necropolis of domed mausolea and mosques built over several centuries under Mamluk and earlier Islamic rulers. This albumen print, catalogued as number 152 in an album that also covers Jerusalem, Alexandria and Rome, shows the stone structures as travelers of the 1860s through 1880s would have seen them. Photographs like this one were often sold in bound sets, so they carry the framing of a Western tourist's itinerary as much as a record of the site. The date range is broad, and the record does not name the photographer, so the image is best read as a document of the monuments themselves and of the growing appetite for Egyptian scenes in that period.
