Cheops is the Greek form of Khufu, the pharaoh for whom this largest of the Giza pyramids was built around 2560 BCE. The print is numbered 159 in an album of views of Jerusalem, Alexandria, Cairo and Rome, the kind of travel series made for visitors in the decades after 1860. Egypt drew growing numbers of tourists in that period, and the pyramids were among the first sights they sought out. The albumen process gives these prints their warm, fine-grained tones.
