The Puerta del Sol at Toledo is not the Madrid square of the same name. It is one of the old gates in the city's walls, a brick structure with Mudéjar detailing, the blend of Christian and Islamic building traditions that shaped much of medieval Toledo. This albumen print was made by J. Laurent, a Madrid firm that photographed Spanish monuments and landscapes for sale to travelers and collectors in the decades after 1860. Its place in an album, marked page 16 and number 19, shows how such views were collected and arranged as a set of Spanish sights.
