Few courtyards in Rome pair a university building with a church as neatly as this one. The photograph shows the courtyard of the Palazzo della Sapienza, long the home of the city's university, with its arcades built to designs by the late Renaissance architect Giacomo della Porta. The Baroque church of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, by Francesco Borromini, stands within the same complex. The print was issued by the Florentine firm of Brogi, which sold views of Italian cities and monuments to travelers and collectors around 1900.
