Few plates in the voyage series show a Pacific ceremony as directly as this one, which depicts a gathering at a morai, or sacred enclosure, on Tongatapu, the largest island of the Tonga group. John Webber, the expedition artist who sailed on Cook's third voyage in the late 1770s, made the original drawing, and the engraving was prepared for the octavo edition of the voyage account. Plates like this shaped European understanding of Pacific peoples for decades, so the scene is best read as a European artist's record of what he saw, filtered through his own eye and the engraver's hand.
