Here we have a portrait engraving of Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat, marquis de Condorcet, the French mathematician, philosopher and political theorist who lived from 1743 to 1794. The plate is signed by the engraver L. Portman, and the title line, "Me. Jn. Ae. Ns. Condorcet," is a shortened form of his name that was common on prints of the period. Condorcet is best remembered for his work on probability and voting theory and for his advocacy of reason, education and social progress during the French Revolution, and he died in prison after falling out with the Jacobins. Portraits like this one circulated widely among readers who admired his writings.
