Published as a two-page spread in *Puck*, the satirical weekly drawn by Vienna-born cartoonist Joseph Keppler, this chromolithograph takes on Chinese immigration to the United States in 1880. *Puck* was among the first American humor magazines to print full-color cartoons, and its large foldout designs gave artists room for crowded, pointed scenes. The subject was a heated political issue, especially on the West Coast, where anti-Chinese agitation was building toward the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The print shows how a popular illustrated weekly helped shape public attitudes on immigration.
