This lantern slide shows a woman standing in the doorway of a tent in the Arctic, a detail that places the viewer at the threshold of a home rather than among the landscape. Frederick Cook, the physician and explorer whose papers and photographs are held in this collection, made several journeys to the far north in the 1890s and early 1900s. Slides like this one were projected before audiences at lectures, where they gave listeners a close look at Inuit domestic life that most had never seen. The tent itself, with its skins and fastenings, is worth studying as a record of how people lived in a harsh climate, and of how such scenes were framed for an outside audience.
