A single Venetian doorway serves as the subject here, rendered in the fine line work of the 1880 Venice plates. The butterfly pencilled beside the signature is the mark of James McNeill Whistler, who worked in Venice in 1879 and 1880 and had these etchings published by the Fine Art Society in London that year. The sixth state noted in the record means the copper plate was reworked several times before this impression was pulled. The catalog reference, Kennedy no. 188, places it among Whistler's etchings, where the artist turned everyday street architecture into studies of light and shadow.
