The title names a particular place, the Adam and Eve, an old inn in Chelsea, and Whistler turned to such riverside corners during the 1870s, when he etched the quiet streets, wharves, and waterfront houses of London. He worked directly on the copper with a few confident lines and left much of the paper bare, which gives the scene its airy, unfinished look. The butterfly monogram in the plate is his signature device, and this impression is the second state as catalogued by Kennedy. The record gives only a date in the 187- range, so the print is best placed somewhere within that decade.
