Kenwood, the house in Hampstead that Robert Adam remodeled for William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield, is shown here from two sides in a single plate: the entrance front facing the court and the garden front facing the grounds. The engraving was published in 1774 in the second volume of the Adam brothers' *Works in Architecture*, a folio series that did much to spread the neoclassical style across Britain and beyond. Mansfield was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, and the house became a showpiece of his taste and status. Look closely at the paired elevations to see how Adam varied the rhythm of windows and the classical ornament between the two faces of the same building.
