Rather than a single instrument, this plate gathers a whole set of astronomical tools onto one sheet, with telescopes and related apparatus arranged together for side-by-side comparison. The engraving is credited to Henry Winkles as sculptor, meaning the design, and it appeared as plate 15 in the first volume of the *Iconographic Encyclopedia*, edited by Johann Georg Heck and printed in 1851. Heck's work was built around such plates, which let readers study objects they could not easily see in person. Mid-century encyclopedias like this one were a major way that scientific instruments reached students, teachers, and general readers.
