Martha Graham's body is the subject here, caught mid-pose in Barbara Morgan's 1935 study of her solo "Lamentation," a dance in which Graham sat wrapped in a long tube of stretch fabric and expressed grief through the movement of her torso and limbs. The photograph is an oblique view, taken from an angle that emphasizes the fabric's folds and the tension of the pose. It belongs to Morgan's dance portfolio, which she produced with the Morgan & Morgan publishing firm in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where it was distributed in the late 1970s. Morgan's images did much to define how modern dance was seen in the 1930s, and this one is a clear example of how photography captured the abstract drama of Graham's work.
