Few pictures in this series show water in such motion, and this stereograph, numbered 15, catches a stream breaking over rock in a way that still conveys the force of the current. It belongs to the Pa-ru-no-wip series, issued as part of the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Colorado River region led by John Wesley Powell, with photographs by A.H. Thompson. The survey worked to map the canyons and rivers of the Colorado Plateau in the early 1870s, a landscape few outsiders had documented. Stereo cards like this one were sold to a public eager to see the West, so the pair of images was meant to give viewers a sense of depth.
