Two figures in a rowboat gather water lilies from the still water of the Norfolk Broads, the shallow lakes of eastern England that were formed when medieval peat digging flooded the land. The image appeared as plate 9 in *Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads* (1886), a book by the photographer P.H. Emerson and the painter T.F. Goodall. Emerson championed a soft, naturalistic style of photography, and the platinum printing process, which yields fine tonal gradations, suits the quiet scene. The book pairs such images with text about the region's marshes, reed beds and working boatmen.
