Two North American B-25 Mitchell bombers are shown churning the water around a Japanese frigate, with bombs bursting in hits and near misses during the March 29, 1945, attack in the South China Sea. The caption credits the raid with sinking nine Japanese ships. By 1945, Allied air forces had largely dominated Japanese coastal shipping, and the B-25 was a versatile medium bomber that low-level attack crews used against vessels, often skip-bombing at close range. The photograph comes from the Ira Clarence Eaker Collection, which preserves material tied to Eaker's long career in the U.S. Army Air Forces.
