Infantrymen of the 107th Infantry, 27th Division, push along a path through barbed wire just behind a tank that has crushed a way through, and one man has already fallen across the wire near Beauquesnes in the Somme. The photograph dates to September 13, 1918, when the 27th, a New York National Guard division, was serving with British forces during the Allied offensives of late summer. Tanks were meant to flatten wire and open gaps for foot soldiers, but entanglements still slowed and exposed men who followed them. The caption data for this print is unverified, so the exact circumstances of the moment are uncertain. The collection is associated with John Joseph Pershing.
