Seen through the compound gate, the old mission church's front is the focus here, rather than the wider grounds. The mission was founded in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, and in 1836 its walls held the siege and battle that became a rallying cry in the Texas Revolution. By the early 1920s the chapel was treated as a shrine, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas had charge of the site. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-produced views of American landmarks, issued pictures like this one to a wide audience.
