Erwin E. Smith's photograph of a horse wrangler, taken around 1910 near Bonham, Texas, captures a working figure whose job was to herd and manage the remuda, the spare horses that cowboys rode during a cattle drive or on a ranch. Smith, a Bonham-based photographer, made a large body of pictures of range life in Texas in the early twentieth century, and his copyright registration shows he sold these views as commercial prints. The record lists the subject as cowboys and horses in Texas during the 1900s, placing the picture in a period when open-range ranching was giving way to fenced pastures and rail shipping.
