Sheet music covers were a popular way to advertise a song, and this one carries a patriotic title, "Hurrah for the Old Flag!," with words by W. Dexter Smith, Jr., and music by M. Keller. Its engraving, made by H.F. Greene and copyrighted by G.D. Russell, dates to about 1865, the year the Civil War ended. Publishers of the period often rushed out songs celebrating the Union and its flag, so the cover reflects the wartime and postwar mood of national pride that made such pieces sell.
