Few objects from 1861 celebrate the flag as directly as this color lithograph, whose title, "Hail That Great and Glorious Banner," is the first line of a patriotic song. The sheet credits A.W. Burns with the copyright and George W. Hewitt with the words or music, and it was printed by F. Moras at 109 South Fourth Street in Philadelphia. The year marked the start of the Civil War after the attack on Fort Sumter in April, when northern publishers rushed out songs and decorative sheets to rally support for the Union. The bright color helps make the banner the clear focus of the design.
