Cover art for a piece of sheet music, this 1859 lithograph carries the title "America. A national song" and combines an eagle, a figure of Liberty, and militia men in one patriotic design. Philadelphia lithographer Lewis N. Rosenthal printed it in colors, and the local firm Lee & Walker issued it from their Chestnut Street address. The sheet was deposited for copyright in September 1859, and it is listed in Bernard Reilly's catalog of American political prints. Publishers of the period often used imagery like this to appeal to buyers who wanted music that expressed national pride in the years before the Civil War.
