Give the Guard a fighting chance" asks Philadelphia men to join the National Guard and serve alongside their friends, pitching enlistment as a neighborhood commitment. The lithograph was printed by the Edward Stern Company and issued through the city's Committee of Public Safety and its Department of Military Service, local wartime bodies that promoted recruiting. After the United States entered the war in 1917, Guard units were called into federal service and sent overseas, including units from Pennsylvania. Posters like this one, meant to be taken in at a glance on street walls, built their appeals around community loyalty.
