A recruiting poster that puts the words of General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, at the center of its pitch to join the Quartermaster Corps. Its promise to let men "earn while you learn," with the government furnishing everything, speaks to a wartime army that needed large numbers of soldiers for supply, transport and support work. Posters like this one were part of a broad effort to fill those ranks in 1917 and 1918, when the Army was expanding rapidly and the appeal of paid job training was meant to draw young men in.
