Many 1917 recruiting posters spoke in broad national terms, but this one is tied to a particular place: a patriotic rally in Chelsea, the Manhattan neighborhood along the Hudson. Printed in New York by the Hegeman Printing Company, it appeared in the months after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when local rallies and parades were a common way to rouse volunteers and public support. Its slogan, "It calls you," speaks directly to the viewer, a habit typical of wartime enlistment art. The print belongs to the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection, which holds a range of material from the war years.
