Winsor McCay, the cartoonist known for *Little Nemo in Slumberland* and the animated film *Gertie the Dinosaur*, drew this lithograph for the Liberty Loan campaign. Its slogan tells citizens who cannot enlist that they can still serve by lending money. The United States paid for much of its war effort through Liberty Bonds, first sold in 1917, and posters like this one urged ordinary people to lend their savings to the government. Printed in color for the New York American, it shows how illustrators turned fundraising into a patriotic duty.
