Earn while you learn" and the promise to make a young man an expert mechanic set this poster apart from the war-era recruiting appeals that focused on patriotic duty. Its sergeant-signed credit line points to a training school run by the Motor Transport Corps, the Army unit that moved men and supplies by truck during the First World War. Because the Army needed large numbers of drivers and repairmen for its motor fleet, the school offered a trade skill that could carry over to civilian work. The poster's chromolithograph printing, with its bold layered colors, was a common and affordable method for mass-produced posters of the period.
