This color lithograph seeks machinists for the Motor Transport Corps, an Army branch built during World War I to move troops and supplies by truck. It was printed in 1919 at the Engineer Reproduction Plant at Washington Barracks in the District of Columbia, a few months after the armistice, when the Army still needed skilled mechanics. Its headline promise, "Earn while you learn," presented military service as paid vocational training, an appeal aimed at young men deciding what to do once the fighting had ended. The poster shows how the Army competed for workers with trades in a country that was rapidly becoming motorized.
