The poster sets a familiar skill against an unfamiliar task: a reader who already drives a car is asked why he would not drive a transport truck in France. The American Field Service had been sending volunteer drivers to the Western Front since 1914, first with ambulances for the French army, and by 1917 its work was widening to transport as the United States entered the war. The printed addresses in Boston, New York and Chicago show that the appeal was meant to reach recruits across the country.
