Recruiting for the American Field Service and promoting war bonds share this 1917 color lithograph, which shows trucks as its central image, a reminder that the war effort depended as much on transport as on the front lines. The American Field Service had been sending volunteer drivers and ambulance crews to the French army since 1915, two years before the United States entered the war in April 1917. Posters like this one linked that volunteer work to the wider home-front drive for money and manpower, when American industry and civilians were being called on to support the fighting in Europe.
