The title itself gives this poster its purpose: it is a recruiting appeal aimed at men with mechanical skills, which the United States Army Air Service needed as it expanded during World War I. In 1917, aviation was still new, and the planes, trucks and staff cars that supported the fighting depended on skilled mechanics to keep them running. Chauffeurs were needed to drive officers and move supplies over poor roads near the front. Posters like this one, with their bold lettering and direct wording, were a common way for the government to reach working men who might not otherwise have thought of military service.
