Cadets at West Point, the U.S. Military Academy in New York, pose in this print, which carries the caption "Wouldn't this tire you?" The joke is in the title: an "auto-tire dance" meant to loosen up the Army football squad. Teams of this era often relied on unusual drills for conditioning, and using automobile tires as equipment reflects how quickly motor vehicles were entering everyday life in the early twentieth century. The photograph shows the athletes' effort at a moment when training methods were still experimental.
