Few automobiles of the day faced a harder test than the cars that left New York in February 1908 on a race to Paris. This view shows one from behind, with tire chains on its rear wheels and a United States flag mounted for identification. The road is little more than a rough track, and the drivers faced many stretches like it as they crossed the American West, where the route left established roads behind. The New York Times sponsored the contest, and the American entry, the Thomas Flyer, reached Paris in July after several months on the road.
