Columbus, New Mexico, was a small border town that became an Army staging ground after Francisco "Pancho" Villa's raid on the town in March 1916. This postcard shows a motor truck supply train readying to head south into Mexico, part of the Punitive Expedition led by Gen. John J. Pershing to pursue Villa. The expedition was one of the first large U.S. operations to rely heavily on motor trucks for hauling supplies, and the scene reflects that shift from horse and mule transport. The card was issued by a commercial photographer, a common way that military scenes circulated to the public at the time.
