Camp Holabird, near Baltimore in Maryland, was the Army's Quartermaster Corps depot and training ground, and this picture shows enlisted men being taught to service motor vehicles there around 1940, just before the United States entered the Second World War. The photograph is a Jam Handy Picture Service production, a Detroit firm that made training films and stills for the military and industry, so it was likely staged to show recruits the standard procedures used on the Army's growing fleet of trucks and cars. Its subject connects to a larger story: the mechanization of the Army in the late 1930s and the need to train large numbers of men quickly to keep vehicles running.
