Set in the Mammoth Hot Springs area at the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park, this view shows a public auto camp dated to about 1923. Private automobiles had been admitted to the park in 1915, and by the early 1920s motorists were arriving in growing numbers, so facilities like this one were built to house them. Photographer Jack Ellis Haynes, the park's longtime official photographer, ran a studio at Mammoth and recorded scenes like this for visitors. The camp reflects the shift from stagecoach and rail tours toward self-driven travel.
