A car on the road above Shoshone Dam is the detail that sets this view apart from the park's many scenic views. The dam sits on the Shoshone River near Cody, Wyoming, just outside the park's eastern edge, and it was completed around 1910 as part of an irrigation project. By the time this photograph was taken, around 1917, private automobiles had been allowed into Yellowstone for only a couple of years, and the picture records the new mobility that was reshaping how visitors reached the region's wonders. The print was made by J.E. Haynes of St. Paul, whose family studio produced many Yellowstone views for tourists.
