Old Faithful Inn, the log-and-timber hotel built in 1903-1904 near the Old Faithful geyser, is the focus here, with a line of parked automobiles out front that marks the shift in who was visiting the park by the 1930s. Cars had become the main way most travelers reached Yellowstone, and the hotel, designed by Robert Reamer and famous for its towering lobby, served as a gathering point for them. The picture is part of the Portrait of America series, a set of 1930s-era views of the United States assembled as a record of the country's landscapes and places.
