Howard Hughes sits inside an automobile at National Airport in Washington, D.C., looking straight into the camera in this 1947 photograph. The aviator, filmmaker and industrialist was a constant presence in the news in those years, and his visit to the capital came at a time when he was under scrutiny over his wartime aircraft contracts and his testimony before Congress. Pictures of him from this period, often showing him in a car or on the move, helped shape the public image of a restless, wealthy eccentric. Notice the frank, unposed gaze, which contrasts with the carefully staged publicity shots that studios and the press often produced of him.
