A chauffeur sits behind the wheel of a Lincoln automobile identified as the presidential car, parked on a Washington, D.C., street in front of a row of stores. The photograph dates to about 1924, when Calvin Coolidge had been president for roughly a year after Warren G. Harding's death in 1923. Lincoln had come under Ford ownership in 1922, and its cars were known for quality and craftsmanship. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm known for its large body of city and government photographs, so it also shows an everyday commercial streetscape of the period.
