A Ford sits at the curb in this 1921 view of a Lafayette, Louisiana street, with commercial buildings and other automobiles lining the background. That the car is a Ford matters, since the Model T dominated American roads in the early 1920s, and by 1921 it was common enough that a parked one could stand as an ordinary sight of town life. The photograph is a useful record of how a small Louisiana city looked as motor traffic was becoming routine, with cars parked where horses and wagons had once been tied up. The caption card is catalogued under automobile parking, which is itself a telling subject for the period.
