Seen from the right front, this 1898 Panhard shows the car's overall form, including the placement of its engine ahead of the passenger compartment. The French firm Panhard et Levassor was among the earliest makers of motorcars, and its front-engine layout became a template that many later manufacturers followed. The caption card records no date, so the 1898 year rests on the title alone. Images like this one document the period when motorcars were still shifting away from horse-carriage construction toward the automobile shape people know today.
