Tower Falls, a spot in the northeast corner of Yellowstone, is the setting here, and the record places the scene there with some uncertainty. The photograph is dated to around December 14, 1923, which makes it an unusual winter-season view of a gathering at a public auto camp. By the early 1920s, motorists had been driving into Yellowstone for less than a decade, since the park opened to automobiles in 1915, and camps like this one gave travelers a place to pitch tents and meet other visitors. Pictures of these informal camp gatherings show how quickly the car changed the way Americans spent their vacations.
