This is a portrait of Gertrude Käsebier, the American photographer who by 1900 was one of the best-known names in pictorial photography. The halftone, credited to Lifshey, ran in the July 1900 issue of *Camera Notes* (page 72), the journal of the Camera Club of New York, which was edited by Alfred Stieglitz. Käsebier took up photography in her forties, after raising a family, and built her reputation on soft-focus portraits, especially of mothers and children. Seeing a working photographer as the subject of a magazine illustration says something about how the pictorialist circle presented its own members as artists.
