Set in the Ha'apai island group of Tonga, this engraving depicts a ceremonial reception of James Cook during his third Pacific voyage. John Webber, the expedition's official artist, made the original drawing, and Goldar engraved it for an octavo edition of Cook's published account. Webber's Pacific drawings gave European readers an unusually direct view of Polynesian ceremony, and the catalog tags this plate under the spiritual life of the islanders. Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779, so the scene records the expedition during its more peaceable stops in the South Seas.
