Taken from the Torre del Homenaje, the keep of the Alcazaba at the western edge of the Alhambra, this view looks across the palace complex toward the city of Granada spread out below. Jean Laurent, a French-born photographer working in Madrid, issued it as one plate in an album of Spanish scenes, and it survives as an albumen print, the paper process then standard for commercial views. In the decades after 1860, the Alhambra drew growing numbers of travelers and scholars, and photographs like this one carried its image to viewers who would never climb the hill themselves.
