Cartagena's harbor and the castles that guarded it are the focus of this engraving, which appears as a plate in volume 2 of a history of Ramón Cabrera and the civil war. Cabrera was a Carlist commander in the First Carlist War of the 1830s, so the book's illustrations show how Spanish publishers presented the country's coastal cities to readers decades later. The record gives only an estimated date between 1850 and 1900, so the exact year and engraver are uncertain. Cartagena, a Mediterranean port in the Murcia region, was known for its naval base and fortifications, which made it a natural subject for a view like this one.
